The second round of this year’s Europe Rally Championship has attracted a huge number of participants. As many as 125 crews are to show up on the Canary Islands, amongst them Łukasz Habaj with Daniel Dymurski (Ford Fiesta R5) and Dariusz Poloński with Balbina Gryczyńska (Peugeot 208 R2) – Rallytechnology representatives.
On 2nd-6th May the best drivers of the continent are going to compete during the 41st edition of Rally Islas Canarias. On the winding roads with a particularly good asphalt the crews are going to make over 207 kilometres of special stages divided into two parts. The first one starts on Friday with one of the longest stages of the rally, San Mateo (25.13 km). On that day, the crews are to make another five special stages. On the final day, there are another six stages planned, which are to determine the winner of the first final round of the ERC.
For Łukasz Habaj and Daniel Dymurski this is going to be the second start in this year’s Europe Championship. Last time the Rallytechnology crew competed in the Azores, where thanks to the great performance they had a real chance to finish in the top five of the rally. Unfortunately, bad luck with the defect of their car swept it away. Habaj is strongly motivated to score high on the Canary Islands, especially that he was the winner here last year in the ERC 3 classification! Driving Peugeot 208 R2 he won in his class with an over 2.5-minutes advantage over the runner-up winner. All this makes us expect Habaj and Dymurski to play an important role in the coming rally.
Polish Champion from the last year in class 2WD and class four, Dariusz Poloński, is going to have his debut on Canary Islands. As a preparation to this event, he stated with Balbina Gryczyńska as co-driver in the first round of Poland Rally Championship, where he was the best amongst R2 class drivers. For Poloński the starts in ERC are a priority now and he wants to compete for the highest positions there. It is not going to be easy as apart from him there are 14 other drivers aiming for the victory in the ERC 3 classification, including competitors like Chris Ingram or Jari Huttunen.
Robert Gabryszewski, Rallytechnology team manager: After the cold and rainy Azores we move on to the Canary Islands. Of course the beautiful weather will not mean holidays for us, as there is a lot of hard work and tough competition ahead of us. Last year Łukasz Habaj showed an unbeatable tempo and I am convinced that he is able to do it again also when driving an R5 car. Darek Poloński is an absolute master of front wheel driven cars and during Rally Islas Canarias he may thwart plans of the top ERC 3 competitors. Coming up is a great rally, keep your fingers crossed!
